Europe's Densest Subway

With a system length of 214km, 302 stations and an average distance of 600m between stations, the Paris Metro takes the crown in being one of the densest subway systems in the world.

Such a design presents interesting challenges.

  • 16 lines
  • 4.16 million daily riders
  • 1.52 billion yearly riders
  • 20 hours a day

Driverless Trains

Automated trains can be found on lines 1 & 14. Trains can be deployed at will from a command center to cope with peak demand. On a driver-based system the distance between trains must be greater for safety. With automation, the gap is much smaller as trains communicate their distances to eachother on the fly.
